Verdict
The iPhone 18 Pro is the best slab Apple is selling Australians this month. That is not the same as “worth $2,099 if you already bought a 17 Pro last spring.”
Upgrade if you are on a 15 Pro or older. Sit tight if you bought a 17 Pro. I would take the Pro Max over the 6.3-inch Pro for battery. I would not tell anyone to spend Duo money unless they already want a foldable and have seen the local RRP.
There is still no regular iPhone 18. You are choosing the 6.3-inch Pro from $2,099 or the 6.9-inch Pro Max from $2,299. Both include GST. Both start at 256GB.
What it costs here, not in Cupertino
US coverage keeps saying “$100 more.” That is true at the door in Australia too — last year’s 17 Pro opened at $1,999. The sting is storage.

The 1TB Pro is $500 above last year’s 1TB Pro. The 2TB Max is $900 up on last year’s 2TB Max. Memory is expensive this year; Apple passed that through harder on the big drives than on the sticker price the keynote talked about.
Where to buy on Friday: Apple Australia, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, Amazon AU, plus Telstra, Optus and Vodafone plans. Apple is advertising trade-in credit up to about $1,595 for a recent Pro Max, and Afterpay Pay Monthly in Apple Stores and the AU store (6 / 12 / 24 months — the 256GB Pro is quoted around $87.46/month over 24). Compare the telco bundle against paying Apple outright. A cheap plan with a high device repayment is still a $2,100 phone.
Warranty is Apple Australia / authorised reseller. Grey-import units from cheaper countries look clever until the battery or screen needs work.
What I actually care about
Burgundy replacing Cosmic Orange does not matter. What matters is whether I am hunting a charger at 6pm after a day of Maps and camera, whether the phone cooks itself in a long 4K sit, and whether the photos look less processed than last year.
On paper Apple moved those needles. Rated video playback is 36 hours on the Pro and 45 on the Pro Max — three and six hours above the 17 Pro pair. Wired charging is claimed at about 50% in 15 minutes on a 60W brick. Second-gen vapour chamber with more surface area. A20 Pro is 2nm, extra GPU core, doubled Neural Engine.
Those battery figures are Apple’s video-playback ratings, not a weekend in Sydney heat with 5G and a MagSafe wallet. Last year’s Pro Max already made me stop watching the icon. If this one adds a real evening, that is the upgrade I will feel.
The camera is the only new trick
Main 48MP camera now has a mechanical iris: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, f/4. All three rear cameras are 48MP. Telephoto is sold as optical-quality reach out to 8x.
I want the iris to work. Android tried variable apertures years ago and a lot of people called them a gimmick on a phone sensor. Closing the blades will not turn this into a full-frame body. If the only change in my photos is a cleaner night shot and less fake blur in Portrait, that is a win, not a revolution.
I would rather Apple spend the next year fixing colour casts and smeary night processing than add a fourth f-stop. That is a bias, and I am leaving it on the page.
What bothers me
The Australian price, then the nastier jump if you want 1TB or 2TB.
The body. Same 6.3 and 6.9 screens. Same island, slightly smaller. Same IP68. Heavier than I want a “new” phone to feel. Most 17 Pro cases will fit, which is convenient and also the joke.
The keynote. The Duo ate the room. These Pros are the phones most people here will actually carry, and they were the support act.
No base iPhone 18, so the cheapest new “18” you can put on a Telstra plan is already a two-grand Pro.
Buy if / skip if
Buy the 18 Pro if your phone is a 15 Pro or older, you want the small slab, and $2,099 does not make you flinch.
Buy the 18 Pro Max if you want the screen and the endurance claim. That is the one I would put on a plan.
Skip both if you bought a 17 Pro this time last year. Same silhouette. Good enough camera for almost every photo I take. Hunt a discounted 17 Pro at JB or a telco clearance before you pay the new RRP.
Skip the Duo unless you will live unfolded and you can wear the local foldable price. The Pros still have the better main camera story.
Wait if $2,099 makes you angry. There is no cheaper iPhone 18 yet.
Pros and cons
Pros. Fastest iPhone chip in a slab. Best battery claim Apple has printed on these sizes. First real aperture control. 2TB on the small Pro. USB-C at 10Gb/s. Familiar in the hand. Sold through the usual Australian shops and the three networks from day one.
Cons. $100 more before you pick storage, then a much steeper climb at 1TB/2TB. Looks like 2025. Aperture still unproven in the wild. No base 18. Dynamic Island still staring at you.
For me the $100 door price is not the story in Australia. The story is whether your current iPhone is two or three years old. If it is last year’s Pro, keep it.
