iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8: 2026 Hands-On Buyer’s Guide starts from a simple split. I have been using a Galaxy Z Fold 8 as my daily phone. I have not lived with an iPhone Duo. Apple announced it on 9 September. Australian pre-orders open 16 October. It goes on sale 23 October. So this is hands-on on the Samsung and a paper comparison with the Apple.
The short answer
If you want a wide folding phone in your pocket this week, buy the Fold 8. If you are deep in iPhones, Watches and iMessage, wait for the Duo. If you care about zoom photos, buy neither of these two. Buy a slab flagship or Samsung’s more expensive Fold 8 Ultra.
After carrying the Samsung, I would spend my own money on the Fold 8 and keep the extra $800.
What they cost in Australia right now
I checked the shops on 15 September 2026.
JB Hi-Fi has the Galaxy Z Fold 8 256GB in Cream for $2,699. The 512GB model is usually $2,999. The 1TB model is about $3,599. Some tickets still throw in a $150 JB gift card. Ask at the counter.
Officeworks, the same day, was selling the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra 256GB for $2,997. That is not the same phone. The Ultra has a bigger inner screen and a 200MP camera. I did not see a clear live listing for the base Fold 8 on Officeworks.
Apple Australia prices the iPhone Duo from $3,499 for 256GB. Then $3,899 for 512GB, $4,699 for 1TB and $5,899 for 2TB.
So the cheapest Duo is about $800 more than the Fold 8 I can pick up at JB today.
What the Fold 8 is like to use
It folds into a short, wide brick. Closed it feels like a fat compact phone, not a tall slab. It weighs 201 grams. After a day I stop noticing the hinge.
Open it and you get a 7.6-inch 4:3 screen. That shape is good for video, maps and two apps side by side. The cover screen is 5.5 inches. Jumping from the cover to the inner screen still feels like using two slightly different phones. Samsung’s software has had years to make that jump less painful. Split screen and drag-and-drop still work better here than on any first-year iOS foldable I expect to see.
The weak spots are real. There is no proper zoom camera, only a 50MP main and a 50MP ultrawide. Night shots go soft. I would not take this phone to the beach. The rating is IP48, which is weaker on dust than a normal flagship. Long games make it warm and it slows down if you push it. Speakers are fine when it is closed and thin when it is open.
Battery life has not stressed me. The pack is 4,800mAh. I get a full mixed day on the cover and the inner screen. I am not hunting a charger at dinner. Wired charging at 45W is useful.
What I know about the Duo without owning one
On paper it is the more sealed, more “iPhone” object. IP68. Titanium. Matching screen shapes on the outside and inside, which should feel less awkward than Samsung’s cover-to-inner jump. Apple’s new A20 Pro chip. Storage up to 2TB. An Apple Pencil is promised later this year over USB-C. Unlock is Touch ID on the side. There is no Face ID.
The costs are weight and time. It is 254 grams, 53 grams heavier than the Fold 8. It is thicker when shut. It also has no telephoto camera. The inner selfie camera sits under the glass, which foldable makers have not made great yet.
Apple’s battery numbers look strong: 24 hours of typical use, long video ratings on each screen. I will trust those after a week of real use, not after a keynote.
iOS will feel familiar if you already own Apple stuff. It will not match eight years of Samsung foldable multitasking on day one.
Who should buy which
Buy the Fold 8 from JB at $2,699 if you want the wide book now, you can live without optical zoom, and you will keep sand away from the hinge.
Buy the Fold 8 Ultra from Officeworks at $2,997 if you want the better camera and you are fine paying Ultra money. That is a different product.
Buy the Duo at $3,499 if iMessage, Apple Watch and the rest of the Apple setup matter more than saving $800 and waiting until 23 October.
Buy an iPhone 18 Pro Max or a Galaxy S26 Ultra if you actually want a phone that lasts all day and takes a proper zoom photo. Both foldables ask you to pay more for a hinge and then skip the telephoto.
